Those who tell the stories rule society.

But, how true is that? And, if it indeed undeniably is true, why is it so?

We have miserable lives, almost. We work for more than ten hours. We have a lot of responsibilities on our shoulders that do not let us run away from the rat race. We have monthly EMIs, rents and other expenditures that eat our peace every day. The road to the workplace is disastrous. Commuting every day feels like going to war. Our boss is an unempathetic human being. Our boss’s boss is not just unempathetic, but also ruthless and aloof.

If that is not enough, the world around us is even more dreadful and gruesome. We hear about rapes, terrorism, religious lynchings, riots, racism, castism, murders, poverty and corruption. Add to it the dangers of climate change. Our world is full of chaos.

All of these combined make us disheartened, angry and frustrated. We want to abscond from this unpleasant world and disappear forever. We want to live in our fantasy world. But, that is not possible and feasible for us, or at least for those people except the ultra-wealthy.

However, there is a piece of good news. Although we can not escape our miseries physically, we can liberate ourselves mentally from unpleasant situations. And, stories play an important role in rescuing our minds from undesirable situations. Stories make us forget our real existence and the problems around it. Stories take us to a fantasy world where there is no chaos. Stories give us hope that one day our real world will be as good as that imaginary world.

That is why stories have been an integral part of human civilisation since its dawn.

And, the people who tell these stories - the storytellers - have been worshipped religiously since the existence of the human race. Because they help wretched people escape the realism and transport them to a fantasy world where their problems are non-existent. They give people hope, the hope of a better and brighter future. So, the agonised devote their lives to these storytellers.

Storytellers are not just those who write big novels. From successful politicians to honoured athletes, from movie stars to news anchors, all of them tell a story. They are master storytellers. Any influential person you see around or know about has been a master storyteller.

One might not be a storyteller, but, his life in itself can be a great story. Such people keep the faith of people alive. They spark hope and nurture the dreams of frustrated people. Rich people are the best examples of such storytellers. Their lives are no less than a fairy tale. They inspire people to keep up with their daily struggles so that one day they too can live their dream life when they will have plenty of money at their disposal.

The storytellers have always ruled the world. And, they will always keep ruling the world. Because miserable people are gullible. And, a storyteller will always fool an anguished person for his benefit.

This phenomenon doesn't necessarily happen on a bigger scale alone. If you look around, you can see many smart storytellers manipulating miserable people around them to get an edge. They can be your friends, your colleagues and even your partner.
